ULAB is the rare private university built around a coherent liberal-arts identity. A guide for students considering Media Studies, English, or one of the only General Education curricula in the country.

University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) was founded in 2002 with a specific mission — to bring a North American-style liberal arts curriculum to private higher education in Bangladesh. More than two decades later, that identity still defines what the university is and is not. ULAB is housed at its permanent Dhanmondi campus and does not try to compete with engineering-heavy private universities; it competes for students who want depth in humanities, media, and social sciences.

The Liberal Arts Core

Every ULAB undergraduate, regardless of major, completes a General Education (GED) core. The GED covers:
  • World literature and Bangla literary traditions.
  • Mathematical reasoning.
  • Natural science fundamentals.
  • Social science methods.
  • Critical thinking and writing seminars.
This broad foundation is the genuine difference. A ULAB BBA graduate has read significantly more philosophy and writing than a BBA graduate from a business-focused university, and that shapes both how they communicate and how recruiters perceive them.

Distinctive Programs

  • Media Studies and Journalism (MSJ): Among the strongest undergraduate media programs in the private sector; tightly integrated with the ULAB Press and the Center for Critical and Qualitative Studies.
  • English and Humanities: Strong literature focus; many graduates go on to MA programs abroad.
  • Bangla: One of very few private universities offering a full undergraduate Bangla program — particularly active in research on Bangla literature and translation.
  • CSE: Smaller than at AIUB or DIU; the curriculum integrates more communication and ethics coursework.
  • Business Administration and Economics: Steady mid-size programs.

Admission Test

  • Written test: English (heavily weighted), Math, and analytical reasoning.
  • Writing sample: A short timed essay, especially important for MSJ and English applicants.
  • Interview: All shortlisted applicants face a panel interview.
ULAB takes the writing sample seriously — applicants targeting English or Media programs are evaluated as much on writing as on test scores.

Eligibility

Combined SSC + HSC GPA of 7.00 for most programs, 7.50 for CSE. HSC English minimum B is required for Media and English applicants.

Tuition

  • BBA: 8,00,000 – 10,00,000 BDT.
  • English / MSJ / Bangla: 6,50,000 – 8,50,000 BDT.
  • CSE: 9,00,000 – 11,00,000 BDT.
  • Economics: 7,00,000 – 8,50,000 BDT.
The humanities programs are notably cheaper than equivalent business or CSE programs — uncommon in the private sector.

Scholarships

  • Up to 100% waiver based on semester CGPA.
  • Founder's scholarships for top admission test scorers.
  • ULAB Press fellowship: Limited research/editorial fellowship slots for English and MSJ undergraduates.
  • Need-based aid through the Office of Student Affairs.

When ULAB Fits

ULAB suits the student who wants to study, not just credential. If you want to read deeply, write seriously, and graduate with a portfolio rather than a generic CV, ULAB is the most coherent option in private Bangladesh. It does not suit a student looking for engineering scale or a pure business pipeline.
