UIU has quietly built a serious reputation in CSE and renewable-energy research. A guide to what the university offers, who it suits, and what four years actually cost.

United International University (UIU) was established in 2003 by United Group, the energy conglomerate. Its permanent campus on Madani Avenue (United City, near Natun Bazar) opened in 2015 and is one of the few private university campuses in Bangladesh built around a real central library and an open quadrangle.

UIU's reputation has grown steadily — not through marketing volume, but through specific research output, especially the Center for Energy Research, which has produced widely cited work on grid-tied solar systems in Bangladesh.

What Makes UIU Different

  • Center for Energy Research (CER): Active research lab in renewable energy, with publications in IEEE journals. Undergraduate research assistantships are available for EEE students.
  • Institute for Advanced Research (IAR): Funds faculty research and provides research-track exposure to motivated undergraduates — unusual for a private university.
  • Strong programming community: UIU's ICPC team regularly competes at the ACM regional level.

Programs Worth Considering

  • CSE: Algorithm-focused curriculum; strong placement into both local startups and international remote roles.
  • EEE: Tied to CER research; particularly strong in power systems.
  • BBA: Quantitative-leaning curriculum.
  • Economics: Smaller program with research focus.
  • Civil Engineering: Newer program, growing reputation.
  • Pharmacy: Five-year B.Pharm with industry placements.

Admission Test

  • Written test: English, Math, and a core subject section (Physics for engineering, GK for BBA).
  • Three intakes per year (Spring, Summer, Fall).
  • Interview only for short-listed Engineering and Pharmacy applicants.

Eligibility

Combined SSC + HSC GPA of 7.00 for Business, 8.00 for Engineering and Pharmacy. Specific subject minimums apply for engineering programs.

Realistic Costs

  • CSE / EEE: 8,50,000 – 10,50,000 BDT total.
  • BBA: 7,00,000 – 8,50,000 BDT.
  • B.Pharm (5 years): 10,50,000 – 12,50,000 BDT.
  • Economics: 6,50,000 – 8,00,000 BDT.

Scholarships

  • Up to 100% tuition waiver for SGPA above 3.85, on a semester basis.
  • First-semester scholarship for HSC Golden A+ holders.
  • United Group employee dependants receive a sibling-style waiver.
  • Need-based aid through the Office of Student Welfare.

Hidden Strengths

UIU's smaller cohort size compared to AIUB or DIU means the labs are less crowded and faculty-student interaction is genuine. The campus location near Natun Bazar makes it accessible from both Bashundhara and Badda. If you want a focused engineering or research-leaning degree at moderate cost, UIU deserves a spot on the shortlist.
