A practical guide to NSU — Bangladesh's first private university. What the trimester system means for you, which programs are actually strongest, and what four years cost end-to-end.

North South University (NSU) opened in 1992 as the first private university established under Bangladesh's Private University Act. Over three decades later it remains the benchmark for private higher education, particularly through its School of Business and Economics and its CSE program.

This guide focuses on what an applicant in 2026 actually needs to decide whether NSU fits: the admission test, the academic calendar, the programs that hold up, and the four-year cost.

The Bashundhara Campus and the Trimester Calendar

NSU's permanent campus sits in Bashundhara R/A and was the country's first purpose-built private university campus. The library, IUS centre, and central atrium are the daily hubs for students.

Academically, NSU runs on a trimester calendar — Spring, Summer, Fall — rather than the two-semester system used by most public universities. A bachelor's program runs 12 trimesters, roughly four years, with the option to accelerate by overloading credits in Summer. This shorter overall timeline is a real factor for students who want to enter the job market a year earlier than their public-university peers.

Programs That Genuinely Stand Out

  • School of Business and Economics (SBE): AACSB-accredited; BBA carries the highest GPA cut-off of any NSU undergraduate program.
  • CSE: Algorithm-heavy curriculum; the Programming Lab feeds students into ICPC teams and the Dhaka tech industry.
  • B.Pharm: Five-year professional program with strong placement into Square, Beximco, and Incepta.
  • EEE and Architecture: Smaller departments, both nationally recognised.

Admission Test Structure

NSU's in-house admission test is computer-based for most programs and is held three times a year aligned with each trimester:
  • English — vocabulary, reading comprehension, sentence correction.
  • Math — SAT-style algebra, geometry, and limited calculus for engineering.
  • Analytical reasoning — weighted heavily for SBE applicants.
For BBA, English is the decisive section; for CSE and EEE, Math becomes the differentiator.

Eligibility Floor

Generally, a combined SSC + HSC GPA of 7.50 for Engineering and Pharmacy, 7.00 for Business and Economics. Golden GPA holders in both SSC and HSC may qualify for the Vice-Chancellor's list and bypass the written test.

The Real Four-Year Cost

NSU is among the more expensive private universities. Realistic ranges:
  • BBA (132 credits): 13,00,000 – 15,00,000 BDT total.
  • CSE / EEE (130–136 credits): 14,00,000 – 16,00,000 BDT.
  • B.Pharm (164 credits over five years): 16,00,000 – 18,00,000 BDT.
These exclude the one-time admission fee (around 30,000 BDT), per-trimester activity fees, lab fees, and books — budget another 1,50,000 to 2,00,000 BDT in incidental costs.

Scholarship Policy

NSU is strict and CGPA-driven:
  • Trimester CGPA 3.90+ : full tuition waiver.
  • 3.75 – 3.89 : 50%.
  • 3.50 – 3.74 : 25%.
  • Freedom Fighter quota: 100% waiver for verified candidates.
  • Need-based aid through the Student Welfare office.

What the Brochure Does Not Mention

The trimester load is genuinely heavy: mid-terms hit in week 6, finals in week 12, and the recovery gap between terms is short. Students expecting a public-university pace struggle in their first year. The flip side — graduating a year earlier — matters more than most applicants realise.
