IUB Admission Guide 2026: The Quiet Strength of Independent University Bangladesh

Why IUB attracts a particular kind of student — small cohorts, a green Bashundhara campus, the country's pioneer Media and Communication program, and a calmer alternative to the NSU-BRACU rush.

Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) launched in 1993 as one of the earliest private universities under the new Private University Act. Its permanent Bashundhara campus opened in 2008 and was the first private university building in Bangladesh to be entirely housed in a single, LEED-rated structure designed for academic use.

IUB is most often identified with media — it was the first private university in Bangladesh to offer an undergraduate degree in Media and Communication, when most public universities still treated journalism as a postgraduate-only subject.

Where IUB Genuinely Stands Out

  • School of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (SLASS): Solid English, Anthropology, and Economics programs. The Media and Communication track produces a recognisable share of the working broadcast journalists and creative-agency leads in Dhaka.
  • School of Business (SBE): BBA with finance and marketing concentrations; internship-heavy curriculum.
  • School of Pharmacy and Public Health: Five-year B.Pharm program is the strongest science program on campus.
  • School of Environmental Science and Management (SESM): A genuinely unusual offering — environmental science as a full undergraduate major.
  • CSE and EEE: Smaller than at NSU or BRACU, but the class sizes are small and faculty attention is high.

Campus and Day-to-Day Rhythm

The Bashundhara campus is LEED-certified. IUB runs on a semester calendar (two long semesters plus an optional Short Summer), which is closer to the Western model than NSU's trimester. The central library, atrium, and cafeteria are the social hubs.

Enrolment is smaller than at NSU or BRACU, which keeps student-faculty ratios low. For students who hated large lecture halls in college, this is a real selling point.

Admission Test

  • Written test: English, Math, and analytical reasoning.
  • Interview: All applicants face a brief personal interview, which weighs more heavily for SLASS and Media applicants than for engineering applicants.
  • Portfolio: Required only for Architecture applicants.
Intakes run three times a year — Spring, Summer, Autumn.

Eligibility

Combined SSC + HSC GPA of 7.00 for Arts and Business, 8.00 for Engineering and Pharmacy. Some programs add subject-specific minimums (e.g., HSC English minimum B for Media applicants).

Tuition (Realistic Estimates)

  • BBA: 9,50,000 – 12,00,000 BDT total.
  • CSE / EEE: 11,00,000 – 13,50,000 BDT.
  • Media and Communication: 9,00,000 – 11,00,000 BDT.
  • Pharmacy (5 years): 13,00,000 – 15,00,000 BDT.
  • Architecture (5 years): 15,00,000 – 17,00,000 BDT.
Numbers assume a normal pace of 12–15 credits per semester.

Scholarships and Aid

  • Merit-based: Up to 100% tuition waiver for semester CGPA above 3.90.
  • Admission scholarships: HSC Golden A+ holders are typically offered a 50% first-semester waiver, contingent on maintaining CGPA.
  • Founder's Scholarship: A small number of full scholarships annually for high-achieving students from outside Dhaka.

The Hidden Trade-off

IUB's small size cuts both ways. You will know your professors by name, but the scale of student-club life is genuinely smaller than at NSU or BRACU — fewer large festivals, fewer competing clubs per faculty. Some students love the intimacy; others find it limiting. Visit before you decide.
