Daffodil International University built the largest private campus in Bangladesh and bet heavily on IT and entrepreneurship. This guide weighs what students actually get and what they give up.

Daffodil International University (DIU) was established in 2002 and has taken a path no other private university in Bangladesh has tried at this scale. It abandoned its central Dhaka campus and consolidated everything at the 150-acre Daffodil Smart City in Birulia, Ashulia — a purpose-built education township roughly 25 km from central Dhaka.

For an applicant, the decision to consider DIU is really a decision about whether you want that very specific environment.

The Smart City Campus

The Smart City campus is unlike anything else in the private sector — it includes academic blocks, on-campus dorms for both genders, a faculty residential area, sports facilities, a printing press, and even a small commercial zone for student-run businesses. It feels more like a small town than a single-building campus.

The trade-off is the location. Daily commuting from central Dhaka is not realistic for most students. Most undergraduates either live on-campus in dorms or share rentals near the Ashulia Bypass.

The IT and Entrepreneurship Focus

DIU's institutional identity is built around technology and entrepreneurship — partly because its founder, Md. Sabur Khan, is a long-running figure in Bangladesh's ICT industry.
  • Software Engineering: A standalone department, separate from CSE — rare among private universities in Bangladesh.
  • Multimedia and Creative Technology (MCT): Distinctive program combining graphics, animation, and game design.
  • Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center: Runs an annual startup incubation cycle for student teams.

Other Programs

  • CSE: Largest program by enrolment.
  • EEE: Mid-size department.
  • BBA: Standard curriculum with strong club culture.
  • English: Communication-focused.
  • Allied Health Sciences: Nutrition, public health — emerging area for DIU.

Admission Test

  • Three intakes per year.
  • Computer-based test: English, Math, and a subject-specific section.
  • Direct admission for HSC Golden A+ holders meeting SSC criteria.
  • Test centers also operate at several outreach campuses across the country during peak intake — useful for applicants from outside Dhaka.

Eligibility

Combined SSC + HSC GPA of 6.50 for Business, 7.50 for Engineering. Lower than at NSU or BRACU, which expands access but also affects average cohort strength.

Costs

  • CSE / SWE: 6,50,000 – 8,50,000 BDT total.
  • BBA: 5,00,000 – 6,50,000 BDT.
  • MCT: 6,00,000 – 7,50,000 BDT.
  • On-campus dorm: roughly 4,000 – 7,000 BDT/month including food, varying by room type.
DIU is one of the more affordable mid-tier private universities, particularly when you factor in dorm-based living costs versus renting in central Dhaka.

Scholarships

  • Up to 100% waiver based on semester CGPA.
  • Generous admission-time waivers based on HSC GPA brackets.
  • Sister/brother concession for siblings enrolled simultaneously.

Who DIU Fits

It suits students who want an immersive campus-life experience, value affordability, and are comfortable with the Ashulia location. It does not suit students who need to live at home or who want the corporate-internship density of a Dhanmondi or Bashundhara campus.
